Julia Morgan was born in San Francisco in 1872. She was one of the first women graduated from UC Berkeley with a civil engineering degree.  After receiving her degree, Julia studied architecture at the Ecole Nationale et Speciale des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Julia was the first licensed woman architect in California.
After working for John Galen Howard for several years, Julia opened her own business and established herself as an excellent residential architect. Her projects include the Bell Tower on Mills College and the Asilomar Conference Center.  Morgan was the primary architect of the Hearst Castle in San Simeon.
