Japanese Town, Walnut Grove (date unknown)
Two small towns, about 30 miles from Sacramento, were havens for early Asian immigrants in California.  The two towns,  Locke and Walnut Grove, are only about a mile apart and are close to the river.
Locke is listed on the National Register of Historical Places as it is the only town in the US that was built for Chinese by Chinese.  Most of the buildings in Locke were constructed before 1916 and very little construction has been done since the 1920s
Various parts of Walnut Grove are also listed on the National Register of Historical Places including
Walnut Grove Gakuen Hall, which was built in 1927 as a Japanese language school
Chinese American Historic District which includes mostly buildings in 1937.  The new buildings are located on the spot where a previous community was destroyed by a fire in 1915
Japanese American Historic District includes buildings that were designed and built by Japanese. Japantown was constructed shortly after the fire of 1915, which destroyed Walnut Grove’s Chinatown.  Most of the buildings still standing were constructed around 1916
